When you begin to feel resistance, it means the cutting has developed roots.

Check for root development every week or so by tugging gently on the stem.

Inspect the pot every few days and water lightly if the potting medium begins to dry out.

Place the pot inside a loosely secured clear plastic bag, and set it in a location with bright, indirect light.

Dip the cut end in rooting hormone, then plant the cutting in a 4-inch pot filled with a seed-starter mix or standard potting soil.

Zinnias are available from the faintest pastel to the most vibrant colors. The best thing is the fantastic range of colors. The flower heads come in a variety of shapes from single and double blooms, to spidery-shaped to domes. They can be dwarf to giant, ranging from 6 inches to over 4 feet. Zinnias come in a multitude of varieties.

If you choose to get an early start and plan to transplant, plant them in a peat pot that can be planted directly into the garden or planting bed, as not to disrupt the roots.
